Alan Albarran, Management of Electronic Media, 2nd edition  Wadsworth, 2001.

The student is expected to complete the following objectives:
  • To set professional goals as a student to include, with appropriate timing, management positions.
  • To be able to identify the roles and functions of electronic media managers.
  • To understand finances of a facility, personnel policy, marketing, and audience research in electronic media.
  • To recognize job opportunities, management standards and leadership requirements in sales, promotion, and news.
  • To learn some of the differences of managing public service roles of commercial radio and television, public broadcasting, and internet facilities.

  • Assigned readings in text, lectures, press reports on annual NAB Fall Radio Convention in Broadcasting and Cable, guest speakers, business press reports, and news workshop attendance when announced by sponsors.

    The following are methods by which the course objectives will be evaluated:

    Two exams will count 40% each and 20% of grade will come from class reports and other forms of participation.

    A=90-100, B=80-89, C=70-79, D=60-69, F=less than 60

    20 % of grade is from reports and evaluations. Students will be given a professional/industry news source to read regularly and make frequent reports on management/leadership issues raised by story content. To understand and make a meaningful report students may need to undertake extra reading in texts, including textbook for this course, or in other sources. Other forms of participation may include attendance at university events and outside professional/industry events when appropriate.

    Attendance is required by University policy. After four weeks of absences your grade will be become an "F" as announced in University literature. Grade may be lowered for excessive absences over three. Because of the importance of being on-time and meeting deadlines, tardiness will be noted on the roll and may affect the grade.
